Railway Station Brig

Large Span Timber Vault Structure

The project proposes a new timber roof structure for a main station of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) in Brig, Switzerland. The shells are oriented towards the surrounding mountains, allowing views and providing natural lighting of the platforms. At the same time, the individual shells relate to the size of the surrounding buildings. The structure consists of intersecting timber shells made from cross laminated timber. The use of local timber in combination with a shell structure create a sustainable and very material efficient timber roof with spans up to 23m. Structural supports are fabricated from glue-laminated timber and integrate seating for waiting passengers, lighting and water evacuation of the roof structure.
