Flat2Form System

Form Defining System for Sheet Material

The design of the Flat2Form canopy panel is based on a simple system for bending two parallel strips of sheet material into a predefined geometric shape by placing the connections between the panels into specific arrangements. The canopy's form is based on traditional vault constructions that form developable surfaces. It serves as a protection against direct sunshine and rainfall. Those performative properties and their depending parameters as well as the structural analysis of the system are informed by testing fully functional 1:1 mock-ups of facade panels and structural elements. The resulting data is linked to a digital model that provides all the information for an automated fabrication processes. The project won the first prize of the Arch+ Prize Simple Systems - Complex Capacities organized by Achim Menges and was published in the issue Post-Oil City 196/197 of the Arch+ Magazine.
